Spiky sadness
In the last few years I’ve put in hedgehog shelters, made sure the pond had some shallow sloping access points for safe drinking, put out hog-friendly food when it’s hard frost, ice or snow, I’ve left piles of wood, leaves etc. for nesting and grubbing, even made sure there are fence gaps for them to move between neighbouring grounds. I was rewarded with some bustling, snuffling residents who often came almost sociably close when sitting outside at twilight on a summer’s evening.
So I was ridiculously sad to find this dead baby hedgehog floating in my pond this morning. I just don’t know what more I could have done to help nature along a bit better.
Bugger.
