All Aboard!
Back in June I posted a blip from my day volunteering with Project Wingman, when the Wingman bus came to one of the Reading hospitals. Project Wingman is a charity that started at the beginning of the pandemic - bringing grounded airline crew together to support the NHS - UK’s National Health Service. What began as static lounges in many hospitals across the country, mostly serving those at the front line on the covid wards, has evolved into 2 double decker busses, providing mobile lounges to even more hospitals.
The busses move on every week or two and last week one of them was in Bracknell and I did a shift there one afternoon. This week it moved on to the West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham and I once again took a turn at volunteering.
On my previous shifts I worked with other crew members from other airlines which was great fun, but today was even more special because the 4 of us working together were all from my own airline, all based in London. We’ve known and worked together for 30 years, though usually on a Boeing instead of a double-decker bus!
We met lots of lovely NHS staff who came to take their breaks in the mobile lounges. We provided hot drinks and biscuits or cakes, and engaged in some good conversations. They all said it was good to be able to get away from the wards and take their break in a totally different environment. We tried our best to make it ‘First Class’.
