TAILS UP - HEADS DOWN
I took a ride out to the Horicon Marsh about an hour away to check out the migrating geese that stop by to fuel up for the trip south to warmer climes. They were there but not in the numbers I expected. Perhaps the late arrival of autumn has their clocks messed up.
But I was rewarded with an abundance of ducks that were present. Here is a pair of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) hens "doing lunch." Judging from how much time they spent upside down they must have been very hungry. Flying uses up a lot of calories so they turn into gluttons when the opportunity arises.
EXTRA: In addition to mallards beau coup, there were quite a few Northern Pintails (Anas acuta)....big birds like mallards. Both are very tasty and I have eaten quite a few of each, although I prefer teal at the dinner table.
Best in Large.
