Man vs Tree

Our son took out the old pear tree to make room for an orange tree. Like WC Fields, I feel that I won't have the quintessential California experience if I can't eat an orange right from our own backyard. Never mind that it took me over fifty years to figure that out. Watching Treekeeper work is a delight. I don't think it took him a full ten minutes to remove this eight foot tree. First he trimmed off all the branches, snip, snip; then he hacked at the roots, bam, bam; and then for the finale he just pulled it out of the ground. The chainsaw? that was just to cut up the trunk for firewood. It was a Bartlett pear, and had been in the garden for many many years, always struggling with fireblight, but producing an early reliable crop of fruit. Although it hurts to take out a tree, we do have 3 other pear trees that are healthier. And the lure of an orange tree is too great to ignore. Next step is to work that soil a bit and then find a tree!
