Wool-carder bee.......

This northern hemisphere bee spotted on the salvia today in our garden...
native to Europe,North Africa & Asia has now arrived in New Zealand.
They are called wool-carders because the females collect hair from fuzzy plants and use it to build nests in cracks and crannies..
The females hover over flowers but are not aggressive, males are larger than
females and aggressively territorial..
although they have not targeted me!!
