Exercising our democratic rights...
Local and regional elections in Denmark today, the ballot papers are *massive*, almost as long as I am. And only a single tiny cross required on each one! The big orange one is for the region (mostly responsible for health service provision), the white one is for the Kommune, who are responsible for almost everything in daily life. Turn out is usually pretty high - 70-80% - certainly compared with typical local elections in the UK as I remember them! This is probably because the local authority is so important and people are in general very engaged.
The forms are long because there are many parties and under each one a list of names so you either vote for a party or for a person. The votes are shared out on the list so there are no wasted votes in that sense. The number of seats is divided proportional to the number of total votes.
It is actually pretty challenging working out who to vote for, as there are many aspects to consider. I hadn't really decided right up to the moment I put my cross down...
Frederiksberg where we live has been held by a Konservative mayor for 120 years but last time they only held on by 400 votes so it's considered an "exciting" election this year.
We are in the middle of a massive new corona wave but face masks have not (yet) been made compulsory. We were almost the on my people wearing them so goodness only knows if there will be a corona spike after today.
