Jamaica Plain Beauty. Leitz Summicron 35mm V4
I have known about this gorgeous Victorian home, and its twin sister across the street for decades. My trip to Jamaica Plain last week to photograph Doyle's Cafe reminded me of their existence.
They are of an architectural style popular at the time they were built in about 1845: Victorian Italianate, reflecting the appearance of Tuscan country villas. I found this rather informative article from the City of Boston about Jamaica Plain and its architecture. Back in the '80s when I lived there, the sisters were single-family homes on quiet Myrtle Street in the Pondside section of the neighborhood. Now, judging by the real estate listings I'm seeing as I research their history, they have been sub-divided into condos. This is a more bourgeois version of what happened to Russian mansions after the Revolution, when they were turned into Kommunalkas: several families occupying a mansion but sharing the original bathroom and kitchen. That must have been pretty rough... This arrangement is gracious living by any standard.
The Extra shows the lovely tower unobscured by the many trees on the street.
