Headstone Viaduct, Monsal Dale, river wye
This grand viaduct crosses the river Wye in the Peak District. It was built in 1863 by the Midland Railway and the line ran between Buxton and Bakewell. The viaduct is now part of the Monsal Trail, an 8 mile cycle and walking path which opened in 2011. According to Wikipedia, the line was closed in 1968 by the Labour Minister for Transport Barbara Castle, and remained unused for twelve years before being taken over by the Peak District National Park.
We are having a short break at the Monsal Head Hotel so the itinerary for tomorrow's walk will be decided later on in the bar.
