Today’s Magpie

Having blipped a Magpie yesterday looking black and white high up in the sky, today’s blip is one right outside my window showing it’s true colours. It landed on a conifer in my front garden and was pecking at the foliage. According to the RSPB, in summer Magpies mainly eat invertebrates such as flies, beetles, caterpillars etc but in winter they eat more plant material. I was surprised to read that when food is abundant they hoard the surplus to eat later by making a hole in the ground, placing the food in it and covering it with grass, a stone or a leaf!
With thanks to Cailleach Wild Wednesday.
