Been scratching my head for a couple of days trying to work out why this unit was not working.  It is part of the new control system for the club exhibition layout.  Tonight I removed the unit to wend it back to the supplier for testing and replacement only to find out that it had been shot!  (see extra)  OK, not shot but drilled through from above.  That would explain it.
