Buckland Abbey
“A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
Charlie Chaplin
Driving through the narrow Devon country lanes was something of an experience, reminding me of our travels on Mull a couple of years ago. Fortunate to only have to reverse once on our drive to Buckland Abbey, about ten miles away.
A couple of hours walk around the estate woodland first, where I'm sure we found Eeyore's house, then headed indoors for a look around the Abbey. It has a Rembrandt self-portrait, wearing his feathered cap, in an upstairs room. The guide told us that while explaining about the self-portrait someone asked, ‘who is the painting of?’ The guide struggled to keep a straight face.
