Canary Girls talk
It’s rained all day so I was pleased to have an indoor activity today. One of our Sedbergh WI members is campaigning for recognition of the female munitions workers from the first and second world wars. She is preparing designs for a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum and today WI members from the whole of Cumbria gathered in Sedbergh to hear her talk. This is part of her ongoing fundraising activities and was very interesting. These women, also known as Canary Girls (the chemicals they were exposed to turned their skin and hair yellow) go unrecognised for their work providing munitions for the soldiers and many died in accidents (munitions go bang) or from being poisoned by the chemicals. A excellent meeting, and I saw friend R too.
