Another gate guardian, but this slightly more forlorn and from an earlier time, stands redundant protecting one of the last remaining staircases that lead to nowhere in particular.

What sights they could have seen after the great exhibition of 1851, then the slow decline until the final destructive fire in 1936.

There is a small museum here that offers too fleeting a reminder of those grander days..
