The Crossroads
Ben and I were going to leave Jackson yesterday morning and then head back up to Oxford. Instead of taking I-55, Ben thought it would be fun to drive through the Delta. Since I've been in Mississippi, I've wanted to take a drive through the Delta and visit the places I learned about in my civil rights history class in undergrad and through my thesis. We drove through Yazoo City, Indianola, Ruleville, and Clarksdale before getting back on Highway 6 and driving back to Oxford. I was able to see Fannie Lou Hamer's gravesite and memorial park, Parchman (Mississippi State Penitentiary), and the crossroads in Clarksdale. I think the only things we missed was Bryant's Grocery (which is located just a little above Greenwood), the Delta Blues Museum, the B.B. King Museum, and Ground Zero Blues Club. We will visit all of those places one day when we have more time. It was a lovely day (minus the rain).
This photo depicts the crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi. It's the intersection of Highway 49 and U.S. 61. This marks the location where blues musician Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil. It's a pretty cool thing to see.
I really do love Mississippi.
