The Laird's Aisle

Part of the magnificently carved frontage of the Pitsligo Pew in the Former Peathill Kirk. The Laird's pew was above the Forbes of Pitsligo burial vault in the old Peathill kirk but is now in the replacement kirk. Arguably the best example in Scotland of a Laird's pew, it was carved in 1634 and raises the laird above the level of the ordinary folk in the body of the kirk whilst reminding them, through the richness of the carving, particularly in the panels shown here of the Laird's Station in life and family history. The panels have heraldic symbols and the initials of Alexander Lord Forbes of Pitsligo and his wife Dame Isabella Keith. The extra is a poor photograph of the entire frontage of this wondrous example of Jacobean carving.
