Very close together

Actually, closer was not possible.
These sugar beets were waiting to get picked up and brought to one of the very few sugar factories. Germany has about two dozen sugar factories left, before WWI it were nearly 600. Automation and the subvention of cane sugar played a role.
I worked three months in a sugar factory, back in 1982. At that time the beets were harvested and brought to the factory immediately.
