A fine place to live?
Wray Castle, owned by the National Trust, with wonderful views and access to Lake Windermere. I went for a long run from Clappersgate to High Wray and then along the lake shore and back - great views with sunshine but an icy wind.
I think the story of the mock castle is that it was designed and built for a wealthy Victorian as a surprise for his wife; she hated it and refused to live there.
