Life in a Northern Town

I'll Tumble For Ya...

Becky Falls on Dartmoor, described in my guide book as "more of a series
of tumbles than a waterfall".

Today it is very chilly, with a biting wind, so we decided on a driving tour of Dartmoor, that we found in a book. Starting at Becky Falls, we just about recovered from the shock of being charged £27 to park the car, and we were pretty much the first people of the day to scramble down to the falls. I had unfettered access with my tripod and filters whilst the others messed about trying everything they could to fall into the freezing water. I know milky water is an obvious shot, but I was so excited to actually have my filters with me, I took it anyway.

After that we climbed Haytor in a force 9 gale, and were so cold that we forgot to look for the granite tranway, which was actually what I was hoping to Blip today! We did stop to admire a border collie/Alsatian cross that was climbing the granite outcrop - my dream dog, but I shall have to settle for our gerbils for now.

We passed through Widecombe in the Moor as we have visited many times, but then stopped to take what I hoped would be atmospheric shots of Dartmmor Prison. I wonder why the prison fascinates tourists so much.

At this point, 3/4 of us wanted to give up, but the 1/4 won, and we went to explore Okehampton Castle. It's a dramatic place, and quite fitting for the day when Game of Thrones returns to the tv - although I'm not going to get to see it until we get home. I can be patient, and I will not Google it....

Driving across the high moor, the sun burst through momentarily, and the colours of the grass, gorse and sky were spectacular. And there below us was a disused tin mine, and a few Dartmoor ponies. It was a photographic opportunity not to missed. Except I did because there was nowhere to stop!

So now we are back in the cottage, tucked up in the warm and watching the white tips of the waves across Pymouth Sound.
