Many areas especially in the east of Scotland have been devastated by the recent Storm Arwen when thousands of falling trees caused widespread damage to buildings, roads and power lines. Around here there have been relatively few fallen trees in comparison although there were still some which have caused problems. In the grounds around Newbattle Abbey there are several old trees and the photos show a massive beech tree which was completely uprooted and an adjacent beech with its snapped trunk. Apart from damaging the hedge around the formal garden and of course losing the magnificent trees, their downfall would not affect visitors but the young horse chestnut tree had to be chopped up as it had fallen across a path. With the bad weather forecast for tomorrow perhaps there will be more trees down and those workers who have worked long hours in bad conditions to get power on again over the past week must be hoping that the predictions are wrong.
