This evening on the French channel TV 5 we watched an excellent program on Josephine Baker, the dancer an
d singer. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri --despite my always having thought of her as French. Beyond her performing abilities she was quite a character, having worked in the French Resistance during the war and having adopted 12 children of all backgrounds.  Recently, she was given the honor of being put into the Pantheon in Paris for her many contributions to France.
