The Abbey of Deer Refrectory
Part of the Refectory, the most substantial section of the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Deer. The Abbey was founded in 1219 by William Earl of Buchan and housed a small community of monks until the Reformation of 1560.
The dereliction of the Abbey was hastened by Admiral Ferguson who owned the Pitfour Estate which included the Abbey. In 1854 Ferguson removed much of the stonework to build a huge family Mausoleum, since demolished, the wall around the Abbey grounds and on his estate.
