R34 Renfrew
In 1981 the India of Inchinnan Tyre factory was closed down and the factory buildings were destroyed. Before it became a tyre factory it was part of Beardmore Engineering and it was the site of their airship factory- the company also built aircraft, ships, railway engines and even London taxis! The R34 airship was built here and it proved to be Britain's most successful airship and the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic both ways.
The front of the building is a 1930s Art Deco design similar to the Hoover building in Perivale, London. This southern elevation was designed by Gordon Gibbs and contains references to the R34 such as the roof and internal lights which spell out R34 in Morse Code.
