Auld Reekie

Auld Reekie no longer! The title of this picture is Auld Reekie showing a snowy scene of Edinburgh from the hill of Arthur's Seat. This is part of an exhibition of Britain from the Air with images on display throughout the city centre. Auld Reekie was once a nickname for Edinburgh when the city, in common with others, was polluted with dirty smelly smoke from the coal fires of homes and industry.

The seagulls flying just in front of the castle here have a clear view today of Edinburgh with only a few tiny patches of snow on Arthur's Seat.
