St Just in Roseland
This is one of my very favourite places in the world, the church of St Just in Roseland, near St Mawes. It's in a wooded valley next to a creek on the Fal Estuary - at high tide the water comes up to the edge of the churchyard. There are several palm trees growing next to the church and blankets of daffodils and primroses between the gravestones. Inside we looked at pages of a visitors book signed in 1944 by American soldiers about to depart for D-Day ... Outside we looked at gravestones with a skull and crossbones emblem, apparently quite popular in the 1700s as a symbol of mortality.
