Some winemakers eschew the screw top or synthetic cork. Cork oaks are cropped every 10 years for their bark, for the other 9 they provide a cool place for sheep and goats to shelter from the midday sun in the olive groves. They reduce evaporation of ground water and they provide a different habitat to increase bio diversity.
So if you get a chance buy a bottle of plonk with a cork, and also you won’t find it in a hundred years time on a beach......
