The Two Towers : Part One

This is Perrott's Folly, built in 1768 by John Perrott. There are various ideas as to why the tower was built and a quick wiki will give you a few of them. However, my source today was Peter, the old Irishman who pulled up for a chat when I was taking the photo. According to Peter, the wife of the builder of the tower was a bit of a looker and he built the tower so he could look out and make sure she wasn't up to any mischief with one of the local farmers in the many fields that would have surrounded the tower at the time. Perhaps more importantly, this tower and the nearby waterworks tower are thought to have been part of the inspiration for the 'Two Towers' in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Although the towers are within a couple of hundred metres of eachother, it's very difficult to get a single shot with them both in. I was thinking earlier that this could lead to a Tolkien week but I'm thinking now maybe more of an 'occasional series'. I will try and snap the other tower later in the week but it's not as easy as it's behind gates which only open occasionally so you have to lurk waiting for them to open - which is a bit weird. Of the picture itself, straight from the camera, no crop, slightly underexposed. And BLUE SKY !!
