We're back!
We discovered this morning that the Hampshire Wildlife Trust have just released a few of these lovely British White cattle on to Whiteshute Ridge, (local chalk downland I have often blipped here) to graze during the winter.
They have been here in previous winters.British White cattle The breed has been chosen for its docile nature, which is necessary as there is public access over the land and it is popular with dog walkers.
The cattle seemed to be settling in well and this one is doing its bit for seed dispersal, with some kind of burr already stuck in its coat. The idea is the cattle eat the tough, invasive, grasses, scrub, and other plants during the winter, allowing a bigger variety of more delicate wildflowers to come through during the summer. It does seem to be an effective, though slow process.
