My husband received this gift from his aunt back in the 1950s as a small boy. The stamp on the back says LONGSIDE TORQUAY. A bit of research reveals that, along with other potteries nearby, the Longside Pottery produced a whole range of 'MOTTO WARE' presumably popular with tourists. People collect it.

Auntie Gwyn was a spinster schoolteacher. I've often wondered if she was bestowing encouragement to achieve great things, or damning my husband with faint praise.
