Hoarfrost
After days of chasing hoarfrost at dawn I thought it was time to look up the etymology of the word "hoar" I must admit that I didn't have a clue! The online etymology dictionary tells me that whereas this form of the word is Old english it derives from Germanic/Old Saxon/Norse haira/harr meaning gray haired, or old. Interestingly modern German also uses a derived word "Herr" as a title of respect (Sir). The connection with frost is now rather obvious as hoarfrost on vegetation sometimes resembles old man's beard.
As I was about to write that this was probably the last hoarfrost photo for a while my MeteoRadar informed me of the arrival of even colder weather in the next few days. I guess I'll continue chasing!
