Las Baragañas, Villaviciosa

A major feature of life in Asturias has been emigration. The more recent wave of refugees from Franco was preceded at the start of the 20th century by economic migrants, who went to Spanish-speaking America. Some of those people have disappeared into history, others who ade fortunes returned. The Casonas de los Indios were the large houses, or palaces maybe, that they built to display their success. This house is called Les Baragañes, or Las Baragañas, and is on the old road to Oviedo, heading south from Villaviciosa. It´s build was completed in 1902, and its builder was Antonio Fernández Pando, the brother of Obdulio Fernández Pando. Obdulio was the founder of the Gaitero cider company and a major benefactor of Villaviciosa - and his Foundation continues to be a major benefactor today. Antonio made his money in Acapulco, Mexico.
This view is taken with a long lens from the southern edge of Villaviciosa, looking through the trees.
In the extra, near my feet as I took the main photo, is a dead tree stump, in black and white.
