Winter Solstice

N and I (along with Bertie) set off from home in the dark, following the tail lights of our friends J and J. The plan was to walk to some nearby standing stones to view the sunrise and see if there was any connection between the orientation of the line of stones and position of the rising sun on the Winter Solstice. Sadly, we did not have the clear sky of the day before so we will need to wait until next year to try again. However, we enjoyed our visit to this clearing in the forest and it felt quite special.
It is thought that these standing stones were put in place in the early Bronze Age, about 2000BC. Nobody knows for sure what their purpose was as they were erected pre history but they hold a fascination for me. There are five stones in this group, three still standing over 2.5 metres tall on a north south alignment, and two have fallen. It would be so good to raise up the fallen ones to restore the original group of five.
