Mosaic from Herculaneum

Another trip on the local train this morning, but this time to Ercolano. A short walk straight downhill from the station and you are at the site of Herculaneum, which was destroyed during the early part of the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius.

Herculaneum is much, much smaller than Pompeii, but it is well preserved and the frescoes and the mosaics are just extraordinary.

This mosaic is on the wall of one of the houses, but I could have blipped a number of different mosaics or frescoes or even photos of the town itself. Getting a picture looking over the town of Herculaneum is very easy as it sits down in a large hole. Of course in reality it only does this because the town was covered in around 6 metres of volcanic material during the eruption, leaving the surrounding present day ground level much higher than the original town.
