Lyke-wake
For our second walk of the day, Hector and I headed round the polo fields for a change. There is a footpath that crosses them which dates back to centuries past when it was used as the route for coffins transporting the dead from the nearby(ish) parish of Heyshott to be buried here. The path was called a lyke-wake, derived from watch (wake) at the side of the corpse (lyke).
In other news, Hector chased his first deer this morning. He pursued it over two fields before it crossed a lane and out of sight and then - amazingly - he came back to my whistle call. Phew.
