Preparing for Hogmanay
Hogmanay, for those looking at this blip from outside Scotland (and there are some from time to time) is New Year's Eve. You can find some usages and information on possible derivation in the Scottish National Dictionary here.
Christmas Day only became a full holiday in Scotland in the 1950s. New Year was until then the bigger event and it is interesting to see even UK wide grocery chains like Morrisons (this is from their Dunoon store this morning )slowly recognising that fact just as they now are beginning recognise the special nature of both Burns Night and St Andrews Night.
But there was still virtually no Scottish lamb on display , though there were Ostrich steaks....
