Watching carols from Kings College, Cambridge
It has become a tradition to play 'turkey/chicken' on Christmas eve. The game involves a degree of risk in that you wait as long as you dare to go and buy a turkey. If no turkeys, you just buy a chicken - hence the name of the game!
This year we won again and managed to procure a Norfolk Bronzed turkey for the staggering price of £3.
Turkey bought and we are all now watching carols from Kings with the fire on and just the Christmas lights. It's all very civilised!
I once watched a programme about the choir boys preparing for the Christmas Eve nine lessons and carols. I discovered that the lone boy treble, who traditionally opens the service singing, "Once in Royal David's City' only gets a few seconds notice that they are the chosen one. The director of music points to the chosen soloist just as the red recording button starts to flash! Whilst one boy gets the honour of singing after much speculation amongst the choristers, I often wonder how the others are left feeling...
