Leaning cathedral of Winchester
This morning we met up with friends and their student daughter for a walk by the River Itchen and Itchen navigation where they flow through Winchester. The city is a very watery place, with lots of watercourses passing through the area. Over a hundred years ago the cathedral was in serious danger of collapsing because it was sinking into the ground which consisted of wet peat. William Walker a diver, spent many hours between 1906 and 1911 working in water up to a depth of six metres to shore up the southern and eastern sides with concrete and bricks. My photo shows that part of the cathedral today. The walls still lean a bit but at least they are stable, and the crypt still regularly floods, but Walker was credited with saving the cathedral from disaster.
