Fading glories
There is something rather sad about the peeling paintwork on this extraordinary example of Victorian cast ironwork. Tucked in below the level of the road near the Episcopalian Church in Grantown on Spey this well is now easily overlooked but once supplied the West End of Grantown with fresh water. It was originally known as Allan's Well after a weaver who lived nearby. The water arose from a spring and was carried by wooden pipes to a simple well with stone sides from which water was drawn using pails. The highly elaborate ironwork appears to have been added in1900.
The extra shows the whole structure.
