Minas Tirith?
I was inspired to seek out this tower following our visit to Sarehole Mill on Monday. One of the information boards there was about the two towers of Edgbaston that Tolkien would have been familiar with as a boy. They are thought to be the inspiration for "The Two Towers".
This one is Perrott's Folly. It was built in 1758 by John Perrott and stands 96 feet high. The "two towers" are traditionally taken to refer to Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul. Which of the two this one represents is anyone's guess.
The tower was built in what was then Rotton Park. The purpose of the building is uncertain. One theory is that Perrott wanted to be able to survey his land and perhaps entertain guests. Another is that it might have been used to spot animals for hunting. From 1884 to 1979 it was used as a weather recording station.
