The Final Frontier
I tend to regard the resupinate (upside down) fungi as the final frontier when it comes to identification. There are so many of them, they all look like blotches, smears and crusts in similar dull hues. Basically, they lack the single killer characteristic that eases the identification of other fungi. Life is simply too short to get to grips with the resupinates. But this morning I stumbled across the only one I claim to know and one of the few to have a vernacular name. In fact it has two vernacular names: the Cinnamon Porecrust, also known as the Suede Polypore (Fuscoporia ferrea). Once again I'm tempted to delve further into this mysterious world.
