Nose to the grindstone

I went to a fascinating talk this evening about the digging up of a Hurricane aircraft some 56 years after it crashed in Hove during the Battle of Britain. The venue for the talk was Blatchington Windmill in Hove and I saw this display hidden round the side of the front door. I particularly like the mix of precision and decoration on the stone spindle mounting and the stark functionality of the wooden stand.
As a young child I remember the cry of the sharpening man who would tour the streets with his horse and cart - you would take your knives out to him an he would sharpen them for you by the side of the street on a stone much like this one.
