Snow Bunting #8
I woke my husband up relatively early so we could go to RSPB Marshside this morning. What I wasn't expecting was the light drizzle and biting cold wind. This made things quite difficult in the hides as the wind was driving the rain directly on to the windows. As far as bird watching was concerned it was fine - 29 species seen, but for photography it was almost impossible.
On the way home we stopped at the retail centre next to the pier and parked up for a quick wander along the front to see if we could find the snow buntings. After only 5 minutes we saw a couple of photographers who were quite close to the little darlings. We slowly made our way over and had a few minutes taking lots of shots and complaining that they were too camouflaged feeding amongst the huge piles of razor clam shells(see extras), and that it would be nice if they moved on to a piece of wood or something. Sure enough they happily obliged and we all got a few shots. That was until another couple came charging along the beach looking for the buntings, one with a huge lens and the other just aimlessly walking too far down the embankment whilst looking at his phone. As they approached, one of the initial photographers tried to indicate that they should slow down and that the buntings were directly in front of them, but they didn't and so the birds flew off as they got too close.
Mildly annoying, but at least we had all got some shots, which is more than can be said for the latter couple - they need to learn some fieldcraft I think.
