Palace of the Valdes

The Valdes family palace in the centre of the old centre of Villaviciosa, about 50 metres from the palace of the Hevias, where Charles V, or Carlos I of Spain, spent his first night in Spain in 1517. So Villaviciosa had two substantial palaces in the 16th century. The frontage shown here however dates from 1806.
The historic centre of Villaviciosa was visited in the 1830s by George Borrow, at that time trying to establish himself as a writer while supporting himself by selling bibles in Spain. His book The Bible In Spain is a picaresque travelogue not much interested in the Bible. Cover photo in the extra.
Borrow wrote "Late in the afternon we reached Villa Viciosa, a small dirty town,...". That´s not at all how Villaviciosa would wish to be considered.
