The Cafe At The End Of The Solar System

Sophie snuggled into our bed at her normal time of half past six this morning and entertained us by explaining why there’s an apostrophe in o’clock and the use of the apostrophe in general, following it up with a quiz testing us on what her class have been learning in history and science this term ( Florence Nightingale and micro habitats, respectively).

After we dropped her at school we thought we’d go for a walk along  the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Kate had told us about The Purple Spoon cafe which is housed in the Bridgwater YMCA building beside the canal, so we headed there for a very tasty breakfast to set us up for our walk.

I’ve mentioned before that the canal footpath features a scale representation of the solar system with a model of the sun at its midpoint near Maunsel Lock. Pluto is just outside the cafe, about8 miles from the sun.

After breakfast, we walked as far as the other side of Neptune, which is only about half a mile down the road from Kate’s flat, if you see what I mean. We took a bit of a detour over the River Parrett and the railway line to find the lane that leads to Kate’s place, getting lost once or twice, before heading back for Pluto and the car.

These swans were touting for lunch outside the cafe when we got back.

It was the sunniest, frostiest morning of the winter so far, perfect for a 5 mile walk.

Apart from a few domestic duties, we put our feet up this afternoon.
