Saving the Acadian Forest, one seedling at a time.
There's a coalition in Nova Scotia whose soul purpose is to make sure that people "age well." Every year there's a call for photos for their annual calendar. The only rule for submission is photos must include folks 55+ years in age.
There is a group of retired folks that volunteer at the KC Irving Centre. They've named themselves "Friends of the Acadian Forest Society." Some of the many things they do are plant seeds for special events (Saturday Farmer's Market, Native Plant Sale, etc.), collect seeds from wild populations, and go on plant collecting trips throughout the Maritimes with gardeners from the Centre.
I've chosen them as my subjects for a photo submission in the contest. They were very gracious allowing me to set up oodles of lighting gear as they scurried around looking for plants, pots, soil, and anything else they needed to transplant some seedlings for the upcoming plant sale. This is just one of many, and I think it captures the care that decades old experience uses when transplanting these delicate little green creatures...
PS: How does this fit my personal "challenge" for April? Many of the plants in my garden have come from annual purchases at the Irving Centre Native Plant sale. Artistic freedom indeed!
