Off the Beaten Track
Tholthorpe, or 'Turulfestorp' as mentioned in the Domesday Book, is a small village just 12 miles north-west of York. It has one pub, a church and during WW2 hosted RAF Tholthorpe just outside the village where No.6 Group RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) were stationed. The control tower still exists although the runway has been mainly handed over to the plough.
During our exploring today we passed through a number of picturesque villages like Helperby and Myron-on-Swale. I'm tempted to start an 'Off the beaten track' series for gems just like these. I will use a tag OTBT22 for this year.
