The weather app yesterday suggested fog all morning and heavy cloud all afternoon. A day for hunkering down.

But instead in has been blue skies all day. So this afternoon we travelled to Martin Mere, which was pretty quiet. J even managed a brief visit to a hide, as it was empty and there were no people in the vicinity. Probably the first time she has ventured into one in two years.

The light this afternoon was fabulous. And it’s always thrilling watching large flocks of whooper swans fly in from the surrounding countryside.

The WWT has instituted measures to try and minimise the threat of bird flu to its collection of pinned waterfowl. The epidemic is having catastrophic impacts on some wild bird populations. A jarring note contrasting with a glorious sunset.
