Traditions
On my walk today I saw this woman fishing. I really liked it because 1.) I like the people who fish here in Istanbul 2.) More people are coming out to fish because the weather has been great and 3.) It is a nice image.
Today I got to speak to my family on skype. Somehow we got on the topic of tradition and change. We talked about what should change and what should stay the same. This is such an interesting conversation to have in Istanbul, Turkey because this city represents tradition and change to me at the same time. This city holds on to its traditions while becoming more "modern." I have to admit that the traditions I have learned about have been amazing and I never want to see them disappear. I also think the changes being made are necessary to some extent to become part of the "global community". At which point do change and tradition clash? And how do we handle it? What stays and what goes?
I particularly like this photo because it is not too often that I see a young woman fishing in the Bosphorus...it is usually older men smoking cigarettes and drinking tea. This is an interesting meeting of tradition and change. I am thankful for both the important traditions that we need and the changes we need as well.
