Playground helicopter

Today we visited the Army Flying Museum near Andover. Our son and family go there quite often as in addition to tracing the history of Army aviation there are several actual helicopters which children can get into…including a Scout helicopter where they can actually get in the pilots seat. This also has a live commentary as if you are actually flying in it. There is also a short video on a very big screen of Helicopters through the ages.  Our little grandson loves visiting and sitting in the Scout. This is a light helicopter developed by Westland Helicopters which was used from the 1960’s to 1990’s including in Northern Ireland and the Falklands War.
It was interesting to see some of the planes, airships, gliders etc from the early days of aviation and WW1 as well as more recent models.

I do remember visiting about 25 years ago when our son was interested in military vehicles and planes. It was much smaller then and very little for young children to do.

The outdoor playground has the big ‘helicopter’ in the blip as well as a Sopwith Camel and also a Control Tower.
Nice to see some blue sky after the dismal foggy day we had yesterday.

There are much bigger Museums with many more big planes at The Fleet Air arm museum at Yeovilton and also the RAF museum at Hendon ( I haven’t visited either of those since our children were younger either) but this is very near their home.
