Ashling Murphy’s funeral today
She was 23, a teacher and musician in County Offaly in Ireland. She was brutally murdered by a man while out running on a canal side path in Tullamore last Wednesday afternoon. It could be any woman.
There was a massive attendance at her funeral, including the President and the Prime Minister of Ireland. It seems this indicates a determination in Ireland by the government to bring in change, both to the culture, and to public provision.
Meanwhile our government refuses to make misogyny a specific hate crime - but may be forced to, albeit kicking and screaming, as the House of Lords has voted for it to happen. The government need to provide resources, in particular to the police, so that they respond when a woman rings to say she is in danger.
Of course we know it’s #not all men who are violent to women, but that’s not enough. They need to take responsibility for speaking up and challenging other men for aggressive exploitative and disrespectful attitudes and behaviour to women.
Also, a contributor to Women’s Hour on BBC radio said “Unless and until we stop men feeling entitled to women’s bodies it won’t stop. We need to stop issuing licences for strip clubs, and stop making films where women are murdered, thus normalising it” Spot on I thought.
