The Collector
If you look closely you can see that this blue jay's crop is almost full. after a gobbled a few more sunflower seeds, he flew off to cache them somewhere for future use. Interestingly, he will very likely remember exactly where he stashed his treasures. This hoarding behavior is instinctive in some species (blue jays, chipmunks, chickadees, etc) and totally lacking in species like sparrows and finches. Interesting, no?
We've had a relatively quiet day, mainly because it is positively frigid outside. Jax and I took a short walk on the Lane; Hubs took Jax out to play fetch in the backyard with a ball (and a 30 foot lead). And we all three took a trip to Starbucks. Otherwise, it has been an indoor day. Judging from the total silence emanating from downstairs, I would guess that Hubs, Jax and Phoebe are all napping. Charlie is up here in my office, sound asleep. The light is going fast so I think we are all in for the evening - well, except for quick trips out for Jax.
I got a package of marrow bones from the butcher yesterday and made one brindle pup very, very happy. The bones are cut into 2 inch sections so it's pretty easy for him to get the marrow out, but takes a bit longer to get all the little tasty scraps of this and that from the outside of the bones. Happily, they are very thick, sturdy bones and can stand up well to his super-chewer skills. In other chewing news, he managed to find his way into the stuffing of one of his beds today - before I noticed, he'd ripped a 6 inch section and was busy pulling the stuffing out and spitting it all over the floor. Well, luckily the bed was not expensive.
Speaking of beds - we gave Jax a stuffed Kong when he went to bed. He woke Hubs at around 5:30 but after a fast trip outside, straight back to bed where he slept until 7:30. So that was a big win…
Dark orange-quinoa with turmeric today.
